MASS MEDIA means technology that is intended to reach a mass audience. It is the primary means of communication used to reach the vast majority of the general public. The general public typically relies on the mass media to provide information regarding political issues, social issues, entertainment and news in pop culture.
TYPES OF MASS MEDIA
MASS MEDIA has evolved significantly over time. Have you ever wondered how the latest news and information was communicated in the past??? Well, before there was internet, television or the radio there was the newspaper. Newspaper was the original platform for mass media. The public relied on writers and journalists for the newspaper to provide them, with latest news for a long period of time. The radio was later invented in 1890s. Families use to gather around and listen to their favorite radio station programs to hear the latest news regarding politics, social issues and entertainment.
After that the invention of the television came. The television soon replaced the radio and became the most effective platform to reach the general public. And today the internet is the most relevant forms of mass media and become a major tool for news and other outlets. Since the evolution for the internet, the general public is now able to access those same news outlets in an instant with just a click of a mouse instead of having to wait for scheduled programs.
INFLUENCE OF MASS MEDIA
Through mass media, news outlets have a, major influence on the general public and a major impact on the public opinion on certain topics. Mass media is the only source that the general person relies on. Mass media also plays a critical role in educating the people. With the information on the internet, one could learn anything from something as simple. Mass media is also responsible for conveying what’s popular, what’s hot what’s not. Mass media tells us about all the fashion weeks happening all around the world.
MASS MEDIA is a significant force in modern culture, particularly in America. Sociologists refer to this as a mediated culture where media reflects and creates the culture. Individuals and communities constantly receive messages which not only promotes products, but also moods, altitudes and sense of what is important and what is not.
ROLE OF MASS MEDIA
Three main sociological perspectives on the role of media exists which are: the limited effects theory, the class dominant theory and the cultural theory. The limited effects theory argues that because people generally choose what to watch or read based on what they already believe, media exerts a negligible influence. The class dominant theory argues that the media reflects and projects the view of a minority elite which controls it. Those people who own and control the corporations that produce media comprise these elite. The culturalist theory developed in the 1980s and 1990s combines the other two theories which claim that people interact with media w=to create their own meanings of the images and messages they receive. This theory sees audiences as playing an active rather than passive role in relation to mass media.
New to painting or wanting to test the waters with a new medium ?
In addition to those listed below paintings can be made with many other mediums such as oil pastel, ink, pencil, markers, spray paint and silkscreen among others. Experimenting with new mediums, even for s short period of time can be fun and inspiring
Here is a sneak peak which includes the lists of all the advantages and disadvantages for paintings medium
PAINTING WITH OIL
Oil painting is the process of painting with pigments with a medium of drying oil as the binder. Commonly used drying oil include linseed oil, poppy seed oil, and safflower oil.
Advantages: Oil paint is slow drying which can give you more time to make any changes or blend colors. It’s great for realism, blending and detail; oil can be used for experimental and playful methods of abstraction.
Disadvantages: Oil has the potential to crack especially if used thickly. Most oils turn yellow over time, dramatically reducing luminosity in white and light value colors. Oil paint never fully cures even when dry to the touch so correct care must be taken for handling and storage. Working transparently requires the use of oil mediums that often contains toxic solvents.
The water soluble aspect of acrylic paints means that a painting dries quickly and you do not have to use solvents to dilute the paint or for cleaning brushes or a palette.
PAINTING WITH ACRYLIC
Advantages: Acrylics is known for its fast drying qualities but is also available in slow drying forms and are almost all nontoxic. Fast drying acrylic paints are great for layering while slow drying acrylics imitate the look and feel of oil. Acrylic can be as thin as ink or thick and heavy bodied for textural effects. When used correctly it will not crack or yellow, and fully cures in about two weeks.
Disadvantages: Acrylic binders usually contain ammonia. And although considered nontoxic, this can cause sensitivity with some people, especially when used without proper ventilation.
PAINTING WITH WATER COLORS
A painting method in which the paints are made up of pigments suspended in a water base solution. Water paper color is often made entirely or partially with cotton which gives a good texture and minimizes distortion when wet.
Advantages: Watercolor naturally creates transparency which automatically allows the changes to be made later on.
Disadvantages: Water color paintings need protection. Water color is usually applied to paper, making the paint difficult to remove fully once it’s dry.
PAINTING WITH CHALK PASTELS
Pastel is actually a drawing medium. But finished works in pastel are often referred to as paintings. Pastels can be used in a variety of ways. Each pastels technique can be used on their own, or combined, to produce a pastel painting.
Advantages: Drying times are not an issue when working with pastels making it an easy choice when working outdoors. There is a wide variety of colors available. Good quality pastels can produce a unique and luscious effect on the painting.
PAINTING WITH MIXED MEDIA
A mixed media painting is one which combines different painting and drawing materials and methods, rather than only one medium. Any kind of material can be used for mixed media painting for example: magazines, newspapers, photographs, fabric, soil or packaging etc.
Advantages: Combining paint and painting mediums with other materials expands possibilities.
Disadvantages: Media used for mixed media paintings can fade over time with exposure to light or air. Different types of protection are required. When one type of material is layered on top of another, extra procedures for proper adhesion is required.
